Becoming a family through Church

In biblical terms, the people in the pews around us are our family. Like the members of our biological family, we haven’t chosen them for ourselves, but they have been chosen for us, and we are therefore inseparably bound to them. Because we belong to Christ, we belong to his family.

In Johns account of the crucifixion, we read, When Jesus saw his mother and disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, 

Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home(19:26–27)
